Choosing a certification: Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, Organic
What each label audits, what it costs, what it pays, and which buyers ask for it - a decision guide for member groups.
Certification is a tool, not a trophy: it pays when a real buyer wants that specific label. Start from the buyer, then choose the audit.
The three main labels
- Rainforest Alliance: farm management, deforestation, labour. The most requested label among mainstream West African buyers; aligns well with EUDR mapping work.
- Fairtrade: minimum price floor plus a fixed premium paid to the group; strongest when selling to committed Fairtrade buyers.
- EU Organic: no synthetic inputs, 2-3 year conversion; premiums are highest but volumes and buyers are fewer.
The honest costs
Budget for the audit itself, an internal management system (one trained officer keeping records), and member training. Group certification spreads cost across all farmers - this is where cluster-level coordination earns its keep. The certifications page lists bodies working in Liberia and members who hold each label.
